Backcourt player and captain Christian O’Sullivan and right wing Daniel Pettersson are among the 2023 cup heroes who prevailed in a hard-fought final against Industria Kielce to win the European crown.
A success story from Magdeburg
Sports Club Magdeburg is one of Germany’s most successful handball clubs. The entire SCM was founded in 1955, with the handball division following in 1958 and soon competing in the GDR first division. SCM won the GDR championship several times and also caused a sensation internationally.
After reunification, the club continued its success in the German national league. National and international titles followed, including victories in the EHF Champions League in 2002, 2023 and 2025 – milestones in the club’s illustrious history.

On August 14th, 2023, the granite bronze plaque for the SC Magdeburg handball team was unveiled on the Sports Walk of Fame in honour of their victory in the 2023 Handball Champions League. This marked the second time in its history—after 2002—that SC Magdeburg had won the Champions League. The German vice-champions claimed the crown in the premier handball league with fervent performances and outstanding athletic achievements. Mayor Simone Borris stated, “The green-red wave of success continues. For years, our handball players have shown that they can not only compete on the international stage but also win.” The team secured the crown in the final game in the second overtime – final score: 30:29!
