BUNDESLIGA CLUB SC Magdeburg – AT HOME ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE
Right winger Daniel Pettersson played his part in the cup heroes’ success in 2021. The team impressively demonstrated how it can also excel on the international stage.
Sports Club Magdeburg is one of Germany’s most successful handball clubs. The entire SCM was founded in 1955, with the handball division following in 1958 and soon competing in the GDR first division. SCM won the GDR championship several times and also caused a sensation internationally.
After reunification, the club continued its success in the German national league. National and international titles followed, including victories in the EHF Champions League in 2002, 2023 and 2025 – milestones in the club’s illustrious history.

Magdeburg’s handball team sealed their cup victory with a 28:25 win against Füchse Berlin in the Final Four on May 23rd, 2021, in Mannheim. This was the fourth time that SCM brought the EHF Cup to the Ottostadt. “Magdeburg is proud of this team,” said the mayor back then, Dr. Lutz Trümper. In the summer of the team’s title win, their success was immortalized on the Sports Walk of Fame. Coach Bennet Wiegert explained: “It is a great honour for us to be enshrined here. We are proud that we can do our part to raise awareness of our city.”
