GUSTAV-ADOLF “TÄVE” SCHUR
Gustav-Adolf Schur is one of the most outstanding athletes ever to have competed in German cycling. Known by his nickname Täve, the cyclist grew up near Magdeburg. He was the first German to win the Amateur Road World Championships and the International Peace Race – the ‘Tour de France of the East’. He won bronze in Melbourne and silver in Rome with the all-German Olympic team. His long list of achievements also includes six titles in the East German championships and four in the East German Tour. During his active career, Täve was repeatedly voted East German Sportsman of the Year and, in 1990, was voted the greatest East German sportsman of all time.
Täve Schur was among the first to be honoured on the Sports Walk of Fame in Magdeburg in 2007. From 150 nominations, the residents selected ten sporting legends with ties to the city of Otto. Täve’s greatest achievement is immortalised on the bronze plaque: winning Olympic silver in 1960. Former Mayor Lutz Trümper described the honour at the time as “a testament to his sporting achievements and commitment to ideals”.
