WOLFGANG GÜLDENPFENNIG – ON COURSE FOR MEDALS
Magdeburg’s first Olympic medallist in rowing always sought out new challenges—including changing boat classes.
Wolfgang Güldenpfennig was actually considered too short, standing at “only” 1.83 meters tall. However, the scouting coach at the time recognized his talent and “made an exception.” This marked the beginning of the Magdeburg native’s career. The rower from SCM began his successful sporting achievements in the double scull, switching to the single scull in 1972 and the quadruple scull in 1975. Wolfgang Güldenpfennig retired from competitive sport after winning two Olympic medals and two world championship titles. Later, the sports scientist worked as a coach at his home club.
