FIRST OLYMPIC GOLD FOR GERMANY
Germany’s first gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris was perfect: Magdeburg swimmer Lukas Märtens won the 400-meter freestyle in a thrilling race. With a time of 3:41.78 minutes, he was unbeatable.
Lukas Märtens is one of the greatest swimmers of our time. Even as a child, he was drawn to the water—a passion that quickly led to an extraordinary career. In 2022, the Magdeburg native was crowned European champion in the 400-meter freestyle. He fulfilled his biggest dream at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris: gold in the 400-meter freestyle. Following his gold medal race in Paris, Lukas Märtens sent a declaration of love to his hometown: “Magdeburg is the most beautiful city in the world, I am proud to have been born there,” he said on ARD television.
On April 12th, 2025, Lukas Märtens set a new world record in the 400-meter freestyle in Stockholm with a time of 3:39.96 minutes, beating Paul Biedermann’s record from 2009.

Lukas Märtens made German sporting history at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The 22-year-old swimmer secured Germany’s first gold medal at Paris 2024 with a breathtaking victory in the 400-meter freestyle, the first gold medal for a German pool swimmer since “Albatros” Michael Groß in 1988. “I looked at the scoreboard and thought, ‘No, that can’t be.’ It was totally unexpected following this season of hard work,” said Märtens after his victory.
