OLYMPIC CHAMPION FROM MAGDEBURG
Arno Bieberstein competed for SC Hellas, a well-known swimming club in Magdeburg. At that time, he was one of the best swimmers in the world.
During his career, Arno Bieberstein won the German championship in the 100 m backstroke three times in a row from 1905 to 1907. He also won the gold medal in the 100 m backstroke at the 1908 Olympic Games in London. In 1988, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The swimming legend trained in Magdeburg at the Schöppensteg sports facility.

He was the fastest 100-meter backstroke swimmer in the Olympic pool in London: the city of Magdeburg honours Arno Bieberstein for his Olympic gold medal in 1908 with a plaque on the “Sports Walk of Fame”. He was the first Olympic champion from Magdeburg. There is also a swimming event in his honour, the Arno Bieberstein Cup.
