Stefan Kretzschmar is one of the most striking personalities in German handball – thanks to his sporting achievements and his charisma. Born in Leipzig and nicknamed ‘Kretzsche’, he found his sporting home at SC Magdeburg in 1996, where he became one of the best left wingers of his time. He scored 1,691 goals in 413 Bundesliga matches and won the Champions League as well as the German championship with his team SC Magdeburg. He was also a three-time winner of the EHF Cup and played in 218 international matches for the German national team.
In 2007, the bronze plaque for the prominent left winger of SC Magdeburg was unveiled on the Sports Walk of Fame in front of numerous fans. The handball star was one of the first sports legends from Magdeburg to be immortalised on the Walk of Fame. From 150 nominations, a jury selected 32 athletes, from which the people of Magdeburg chose the ten most significant.
