A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE
In 2002, SC Magdeburg became the first German handball club to win the Champions League. It all happened in front of 8,000 spectators at their home ground, the Bördelandhalle. This was one of the highlights of Steffen Stiebler’s career as an SCM player.
Steffen Stiebler was the SCM captain during a period of great success. The list of his accomplishments is extensive. He was an exceptional player, particularly in defence, playing 18 games for the German national team as well, however remaining loyal to SCM throughout his career. As a player, he wore the SCM jersey from 1989 to 2009 and holds the club record with 499 Bundesliga games. He became SCM’s sporting director in January 2014.

The 27th of April 2002 is a date that will remain unforgettable for every German handball fan – the day on which SC Magdeburg won the Champions League. It was an emotional game in their home arena: the fans held up a banner behind the goal with the words: “Today is a day to make history.” Indeed, SCM made history. The Elbe city team became the first German club to win the Champions League. The team defeated the Hungarian club KC Fotex Veszprem 30:25 (15:10) in the final return leg. This victory is reflected in the outstanding career of Steffen Stiebler. He is honoured on the Sports Walk of Fame for this victory and the extraordinary achievements of his career.
