MAGDEBURG SOCCER LEGEND
Successful Magdeburg native: By the end of his career in 1979, Jürgen Sparwasser had played in 49 international matches for the GDR and 46 European Cup matches. He celebrated three championship titles and four cup victories with 1. FC Magdeburg.
Jürgen Sparwasser began his career at BSG Lok Halberstadt. In 1964, he moved to Magdeburg. The striker made his debut in the GDR first division before his 18th birthday. He won three championships, four GDR Cup titles, and the European Cup in 1974 with 1. FC Magdeburg. Sparwasser played 53 times for the GDR national team and scored 15 goals, including the winning goal for the GDR team in their only game against the West German national team during the 1974 World Cup. He won the bronze medal in 1972 with the Olympic team, for which he played 11 international matches between 1968 and 1975.
Jürgen Sparwasser is honoured on Magdeburg’s Sports Walk of Fame primarily for his success at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Playing for the GDR team, the Magdeburg native won the bronze medal with a 3-2 victory in the group match against the West German Olympic team. By the way: The separation in German-German sports was finally complete when the GDR team marched into the 1972 Summer Olympics. For the first time, two German teams competed under their own flags and anthems.
