Dear residents of Magdeburg, dear guests,
What Hollywood can do, Magdeburg can do even better: anyone strolling along Breiter Weg in the city center of Otto’s city will inevitably “stumble” across the Sports Walk of Fame.
Modeled after the famous Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, it has a different purpose: the focus here is not on stars from the entertainment industry, but on outstanding athletic achievements. And the sports city of Magdeburg has many of those to offer.
Over the past 100 years, more than 100 athletes from our city have won over 400 medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships, and European Championships. In addition, there are numerous titles from our extremely successful club teams. This is an unparalleled record that impressively demonstrates how deeply rooted top-class sport and passion are in Magdeburg.
The 60 x 60 centimeter floor tiles make these successes visible on the Sports Walk of Fame. They feature not only the names, but also the years of the greatest triumphs. They honor athletes and coaches with a direct connection to Magdeburg – all of them personalities who have made our city proud and carried its name out into the world.
The Sports Walk of Fame is thus a part of our city’s identity. It invites you to pause, marvel, remember, and be infected by the enthusiasm for sports.
To learn more about these sports stars, I cordially invite you to not only stroll along the Sports Walk of Fame, but also to discover the stories behind the names. Let yourself be inspired—because Magdeburg is not only a city of sports, Magdeburg is a city of champions!
Yours sincerely,
Simone Borris
Mayor of the state capital Magdeburg
