1st FC Magdeburg was the ultimate cup-winning team in the GDR. The club emerged victorious from the FDGB Cup final seven times. On May 8th, 1974, coach Heinz Krügel’s team defeated the defending champions AC Milan by 2-0 in Rotterdam, becoming the only GDR club ever to win a European club competition. Players such as Jürgen Sparwasser, Wolfgang Seguin, and goalkeeper Ulrich Schulze left their mark on this historic final, which remains the greatest success in the club’s history to this day. In addition to three GDR championship titles, the club was a household name in international soccer in the 1970s.
