As a long-standing world-class athlete, world champion and Paralympic gold medallist, Andrea Eskau is a prominent representative of the sporting city of Magdeburg on the world stage.
Andrea Eskau is one of Germany’s most successful Paralympic athletes. The qualified psychologist has been passionate about sport since childhood and began her career as a track and field athlete at her local club, ‘Obertrikotagen Apolda’. Andrea Eskau pursued her passion for endurance sports as a cyclist and triathlete at the ‘Ausdauersportclub Apolda Cycling Club’. She has been partially paralysed since a cycling accident in 1998, making her competitive debut on a hand-bike in 2002. In 2006, she won her first world championship title, and in 2008, she won her first Paralympic gold medal in Beijing. She has won numerous world championship titles and German championship titles over the years. In addition, she has won many World Cup races and numerous city marathons. She set a new world record in handcycling at the 2011 Hamburg Marathon.

Andrea Eskau is an icon of the Paralympics, both in summer and winter. She has been racking up successes in para-cycling, para-biathlon and para-cross-country skiing for years. She is recognised as the most successful German competitor at the 2018 Winter Paralympics. Andrea Eskau won gold medals in both the individual time trial and the road race at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. She is honoured as an outstanding Magdeburg athlete on the Sports Walk of Fame.
