A KNACK FOR TALENT
He made Florian Wellbrock the first double world champion in the pool and open water. Team world champion Sarah Köhler, long-distance swimmer Rob Muffels, vice world champion Finnia Wunram and butterfly specialist Franziska Hentke are also part of his highly successful training group. What’s more, Bernd Berkhahn has nurtured talents such as Lukas Märtens and Isabel Gose, who are now swimming in the top league.
Bernd Berkhahn completed his diploma in coaching at the Cologne Coaching Academy between 2003 and 2005. Born in Schleswig, he is the successful coach of SC Magdeburg. He is also considered one of the most influential coaches in German and international swimming.
He came to Magdeburg at the end of 2012. Since 2019, he has been working as the national coach of the German Swimming Association (DSV). As a coach, he is known for his meticulous work ethic and thorough preparation. Many of the swimmers who have been trained by Berkhahn have gone on to achieve great success.

In recent years, Bernd Berkhahn has made a name for himself with outstanding achievements: four Olympic medals and world championship titles bear his signature as the coach behind them. He has also been successfully promoting swimming in Magdeburg for many years. The then mayor, Dr. Lutz Trümper, said in 2021 at the unveiling of the plaque on Magdeburg’s Sports Walk of Fame: ‘Bernd Berkhahn has shaped many talents and proves time and time again that the SCM swimming squad can also perform at the highest level in international competitions.’
