Martin Hoffmann was the only player to be involved in the three greatest successes of East German football: European Cup winner with 1st FCM in 1974, sixth in the World Cup with East Germany in the same year and Olympic champion in 1976. This makes him the most successful player in FCM history. His career began at the age of eight with the team `Aktivist Gommern’. At the age of 13, he moved to the club FCM and became GDR school champion in 1969. Nicknamed `Hoffe’, he played his first competitive match for the senior team in the FUWO Cup in 1972 and from 1973 onwards, he was a regular player and part of the national team. By 1987, Martin Hoffmann had worn the FCM jersey 345 times and scored 103 goals. He played over 60 international matches for the GDR national team.

On 18th July 1976, the East German national team kicked off the Olympic tournament in Toronto with their opening match against Brazil. Shortly afterwards, the team was crowned Olympic champions in Montreal with a 3-1 victory over Poland in the final. Martin Hoffmann scored the second goal. His Olympic success is still celebrated today: the plaque on the Sports Walk of Fame commemorates this historic moment, which remains an unforgettable moment in Magdeburg football history and far beyond.
