Oskar Schiele was one of the best swimmers in the world at the beginning of the 20th century. Born in Halberstadt in 1889, he was drawn to MSC 96 in Magdeburg. With the club’s support, he achieved 700 victories, was a member of the German Olympic team, and won numerous trophies. He won the English King’s Prize several times between 1905 and 1913 and even dined with the English king. The prize was awarded for swimming 150 yards breaststroke and 440 yards freestyle in open water.
The Magdeburg swimmer competed in the freestyle and backstroke events at the 1906 Olympic Intercalated Games in Athens and won the silver medal with the German 4 × 250-metre relay team. The 1906 Intercalated Games were the result of disagreement over the frequency of the Olympic Games. They are not recognized as official Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and are therefore not included in the statistics or officially evaluated. Nonetheless, this competition was the most successful of Oskar Schiele’s illustrious career.
