LEGEND OF GDR SPORTS
The nickname “Laki” of former SCM captain and GDR national player Wolfgang Lakenmacher was well known throughout the handball world at the time—and his strengths as a pivot were feared.
Wolfgang Lakenmacher is a legend in this city. The exceptional player turned out for SC Magdeburg throughout his entire active playing career. SCM won the GDR championship in 1970 and 1977 with him as captain. He also brought his skills to the GDR national team, becoming vice world champion with the national team in 1970 and 1974. In total, “Laki” played 198 international matches and scored 422 goals.

The GDR team was one of the most successful handball teams in the world. Its successes included two World Championship runner-up titles and one Olympic Games victory.
The city of Magdeburg honours Wolfgang Lakenmacher with a plaque on the “Sports Walk of Fame” for the first World Championship silver medal in 1970. The world-class pivot is also honoured in the SCM’s “Hall of Fame,” an honour he shares with handball heroes such as Stefan Kretzschmar and championship coach Bennet Wiegert, among others.
Wolfgang Lakenmacher passed away in May 2023. That same year, the city council of the state capital decided to name a new sports hall after the SCM icon.
